Model Protocols for Peer Review Committees

The NPRC Model Protocols for Peer Review Committees provides the medical staff with a state-of-the-art structure and the specialized knowledge to confidently perform timely peer review. The Model Protocols will provide the necessary guidance to end the discomfort of the medical staff in performing peer review and avoid the resultant delays and hesitancy in taking peer review actions.

Developed by NPRC with input from its highly credentialed physician peer reviewers, legal staff and professional consultants, the Model Protocols provide a template that clearly guides peer reviewers in how to:

  • determine if the medical record documentation provides sufficient basis for the Peer Review Committee to evaluate the case provided for peer review
  • identify the applicable standard of practice
  • determine if the medical management of the case conformed to or deviated from the standard of practice
  • describe the deviation from the standard of practice, if any
  • categorize the deviation from the standard of practice
  • if no deviation from the standard of  practice is identified, determine if there was poor clinical judgment that increased patient risk
  • take peer review action based upon the Model Protocols
